Hygiene and Periodontal Therapy

What is GBT?

GBT or Guided Biofilm Therapy is the latest, greatest, and most advanced treatment in hygiene therapy. Unlike traditional hygiene services, Guided Biofilm Therapy helps identify not only where the bacterial biofilm (a.k.a. plaque) is in your mouth, but also identifies what types of bacteria are present to help determine your risk for gum disease, decay or other oral conditions. It’s a pain-free, fear-free way to reduce the risk of cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease. The process can also be used for orthodontic and non-surgical periodontal treatments.

Why GBT?

No more pain, no more polish, no more plaque! Using a proprietary, pain-free technology, GBT reduces the risk of cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. GBT cleans plaque from hard-to-reach places using a plant-based powder that fights inflammation and harmful bacteria in your mouth.

After GBT

The Simple 8-Step Process of GBT

1

Assess

We’ll assess overall oral health and look for signs of cavities or disease. We’ll have you use a bacteria-fighting rinse before we get started.

2

Disclose

GBT utilizes a purple dye that helps us see all of the plaque on your teeth — especially in the hardest-to-reach places.

3

Motivate

At-home prevention and maintenance are important parts of the process. We’ll review hygiene tips for keeping your mouth bacteria-free post-GBT treatment.

4

AirFlow

We gently clean plaque and stains from your teeth using plant-based powder, air, and water.

5

Piezon

We’ll gently tackle tough-to-remove plaque with a pain-free flow of water.

6

PerioFLow

This part of the process is just like AirFlow, but Perioflow cleans deeper within your gum pockets.

7

Check

We’ll double-check for plaque before adding a protective varnish (no abrasive polish!).

8

Recall

Schedule your next GBT visit to keep your mouth healthy and cavity-free!

Case Studies

PATIENT INFORMATION
Age 26, male

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
No professional hygiene for at least 2 years. The patient came for a visit because of gum bleeding when brushing his teeth and to remove smoking stains. Uses manual toothbrushes, does not use floss. Smoker.

CLINICAL FINDINGS
No deep periodontal pockets, presence of gingival inflammation, BOP + (bleeding on probing), presence of calculus especially in the lower anterior region and on upper canine.

TREATMENT
Used biofilm discloser to show biofilm and calculus condition and motivated patient to use electric toothbrushes and dental floss. Performed GBT using AIRFLOW® MAX with AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder to remove all biofilm and stains and used PIEZON® PS Instrument to remove supragingival calculus.

PATIENT INFORMATION
Age 35, male

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Patient drinks energy drinks and Coke Classic daily, doesn’t “enjoy” drinking water. Patient snores, breathes mostly through the mouth, undiagnosed sleep apnea. Health history includes asthma, daily Symbicort, Albuterol as needed. Patient also has seasonal allergies. Patient states that he brushes 1-2 times per day with a Sonicare toothbrush. He does not use dental floss, but uses a Waterpik every morning. He is a moderately motivated patient with caries. 3-month recall.

CLINICAL FINDINGS
Patient has generalized old, sticky plaque at the gumline of the natural teeth, generalized gingivitis with rolled, bulbous facial gingiva. The Zirconia All on Four has generalized light plaque, heavier on the upper right, debris between the prosthesis and boney ridge. There are no exposed implant threads visually or radiographically. All periodontal pockets were <5mm, no exudate, light BOP.

TREATMENT
Patient pre-rinsed with Ora Care mouthwash for 60 seconds before application of GC Tri Plaque ID Gel. We removed the biofilm with AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder and hand scaled any remaining hard deposit which was inaccessible for ultrasonics.

PATIENT INFORMATION
Age 73, maleT

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Patient is on a 3-month periodontal maintenance recall due to heavy soft plaque and calculus accumulation and history of periodontal disease. Patient has multiple restorations present and a fissured, geographic tongue. Oral hygiene is poor. Habit of clenching and grinding.

CLINICAL FINDINGS
Patient diagnosed with generalized stage IV, grade B disease. Probing depths range from 1-7mm with generalized bleeding points. 28% of teeth have a probing depth of 6mm or greater. Localized recessive defects noted in the left posterior. Generalized soft plaque and localized moderate calculus in the lower anteriors and upper posteriors.

TREATMENT
Patient was disclosed with a 3 tone dye – tri tone GC. After educating the patient and reviewing oral hygiene instructions, the AIRFLOW® was used to remove the biofilm on teeth, tongue, and soft tissues. PIEZON® PS was used to remove all hard calculus and in a few areas hand instrument to remove inaccessible calculus.
